Listing is often a gesture of intent as a step toward protection that may never be fulfilled. Species protection is the same way. For example see the list of Priorities for listing or reclassification from US Threatened to Endangered. It describes a process for listing species with a level of protection priority but does not protect them through the listing.

I did those properties for the fires type. i get the whole 'types of types' idea now. though i am confused whether to allow redundancies, like human stampede is part of 'event' type, which has 'location' property, but should human stampede type have a location property too?

freebase is pretty cool.

hey also, the list importer seems to allow tsv importing for some types but not others so thats part of permissions probably? oh, and is there a trick to adding a type to a base? I think our bridge base doesn't have 'bridges' type yet...?

"Ranked list compiler" has a nice ring to it. Publication is an interesting problem. The Fortune 500 has been published annually for more than 50 years, so each separate publication would have to be entered somehow, but all from the single Fortune 500 topic. (An aside: I actually did try a model where each year's list was a separate topic, which would off course eliminate that problem, but it made it really, really annoying to use, and didn't work at all for one-off lists.) And AFI's "100" lists are generally broadcast as a TV special.

Many are, of course, both, and can be co-typed as such. But not all listings necessarily provide any protection. The US National Register of Historic Places is one example.

My comment would be to rename 'ranked list maker' as 'ranked list compiler' or 'ranked list publisher' (or place these in the 'also known as' property).

Also, it would be good to somehow link to the publications where the list was published - could we include the 'published work' type with the 'ranked list' type?

We can make changes to the topic data in the commons - e.g. changing a person's date of birth etc..

What we can't do is make changes to the commons types (i.e. add extra properties to the person type e.g. 'nickname' or 'pets owned'). Changes to types in the commons need to be discussed, agreed upon, then a ticket is created and someone with admin rights (typically a freebase employee) can make the change to the commons type.

The beauty is that you can create and edit your own types, as I have done with Dams. These are noted as user-created types on the topic, so don't have the kudos of a commons type, but are still seen and editable by everyone.

Once a user-created type becomes sufficiently well developed and used it can be migrated to the commons. Again, it is to be discussed and agreed upon, and then a ticket will be raised for a Freebase administrator to action.

With regards to mass importers, I personally rarely have added more than 20 or so topics at a time. I would recommend reading the loading data guide.

The best way is to use the MQL editor. It is best to have a trial run with the MQL editor in the sandbox first before running the same query on the live data.

Some changes dont effect the commons right? like freebase is not totally a 'wiki' right? theres some sort of admin that applies select changes to the public commons or something?

hey also, do you use any mass importer apps? I am just clicking 'confirm match' over and over.

I propose to add "Language(s)" for Person. It's important for everybody, as imporant than ethnicity-nationality, religion, education. In some fields, it's essential like in arts. A "french" writer could live in many countries as a english one. Nabokov, borned in Russia, wrote in russian, english and french.
