The other topic is actually even more generic -- "drama" as opposed to dance or music, rather than "drama" as opposed to comedy, so I don't think these should be merged, either. Nor do I think any data should be migrated to it.

The source of this instance is the WP page for drama - film. The other instance came from the WP page about the general topic drama. I'm in favor of moving the data over to the other instance and then deleting this instance.

Salut! I can't tell you why these genre types were created (since I didn't create any of them) but I see benefits having them.

First, genres or themes specific to a domain are not only useful for labeling, but are themselves useful data as well. For example, with a Film Genre type, finding out film genres is simple. This seems a no-brainer, but consider this: Without this specific type, I could possibly get the same data by cross-referencing all topics in Media Genre with genre information listed on all films, but that's a cumbersome process.

Certain genres can be applied to single or multiple domains: thriller is both a Film Genre and a Literary Genre (among other things), but as far as I know Speedrock is a Music Genre only. What genre categorization is cross-domain and what is domain-specific is important metadata that's captured by having multiple genre types, instead of a single umbrella Media Genre.

In addition, I also want to point out from a data modeling perspective that having specific genre types makes the creation of reverse properties easier. For example, knowing that "Mystery" is a literary genre allows us to add properties that ask: What books belong to this genre? But if all you know is that it's a media genre, then you can only ask vague questions like: What works of media (film, TV, book, music, etc.) belong to this genre?

Well, that's my personal take, anyway. One thing that doesn't quite belong on your list of genres is Book Subject. The correct genre type for that is Literary Genre -- to say a book is about mystery is not the same to say it is a mystery novel. It seems to be a point of confusion. If you come across incorrectly typed topics, feel free to correct them.

Here, we see that Apo and post-apo fiction has many types:
* Book Subject (Publishing),
* Computer Game Genre (Computer games),
* Film genre (Film),
* Media genre (Media Common)

I would like to know why Book, Computer and Film -I added this one- are listed despite the fact that Media genre (Media common) covers all of them.

I see your point and I think you're right. I didn't know that the keywords can be contained. If i get it right when I query to get the movies with the "action" genre it will return all those movies that has the "action" keyword regardless if it says "western action" or just "action", I'm right?

I originally had 'film genre' and 'minor film genre' just to clean this up, but it met with strong resistance. People tend to use the level of specificity they think of at the moment they add a genre to a film. Also, people like to put in "romantic comedy" rather than typing as both "romance" and "comedy".

Film genres are what we call a "phylogeny pattern", where each item in the phylogeny can be contained by another. For instance the "satire" genre could include the "political satire" genre. By organizing them this way, it would be possible to ask for all films of type "satire" and see ones that are marked as the more specific "political satire" genre.

What I mean by this is that it's unlikely that we will be able to constrain input on so many movies well enough to keep it 'clean' in the way IMDB is. You would have to get a dozen people to agree that this should all be cleaned up, and you would have to be willing to keep it clean as people enter information.

"Film Subject", by the way, can point to any topic, which is really much less defined than a genre. For instance, it could be "Iwo Jima" or "Global Warming", which are really too specific to define a genre.

Hi, I want to use freebase to build a movies sites. I found that the Genres are somehow caotic, with lots of non-sense "genres" examples: Space opera, Spaghetti Western, Coming of age, etc, etc, etc. Could we start to clean this out and define15 or 20 major genres ala IMDB and maybe add a field like "Subgenres" or "keywords" to add all the others related subjecst?

You can mark a topic for split by choosing "Flag as split candidate" from the pull down menu to the right of the display name on a topic.

Yuri is overtly lesbian with sexual connotations that tend to be very explicit (more so outside of Japan).

Shoujo Ai (Shoujo-AI) is more 'innocent' and mostly non-sexual love or infatuation/affection between girls/women in Manga/Anime.
