Silberling studied film directing at the UCLA Film School. He began his entertainment industry career before completing his studies. In 1986 he became a production assistant for a children's program. He then began to direct television and film.
He was dating actress Rebecca Schaeffer at the time of her murder, in 1989, by an obsessed fan. Her death inspired Silberling's 2002 fictional film Moonlight Mile. Silberling fell in love with actress Amy Brenneman while working with her on the series NYPD Blue, and they married in 1995.
