The movie depicting the events leading up to the American Civil War, and proceeds to a vivid recreation of the Battle of the Crater. This, however, takes only a brief part, and forms the background to a film concentraing on the Confederate Home Front and especially on deserters seeking to free themselves of the futile war. Nor are the major issues of the Civil War, such as slavery, important to the film's plot - which takes place in a mountain area, far from the big plantations worked by Black slaves.
At the film's inception Jude Law plays a young man named W. P. Inman at a provincial North Carolina town. He meets Ada (Kidman) and is at the fledgling stages of a relationship with her when he marches off to war as a Confederate soldier.
The film opens early in the morning of July 30th, 1864. Confederate troops are entrenched outside Petersburg during it's siege....
