Amondson grew up in Washington and attended Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon, where he graduated with a BS in zoology. He was raised as a Republican and his brother served as a member of the Oregon State Senate. Amondson was a member of the Church of God, and as a minister reenacted the Billy Sunday sermon entitled the Sermon Against Alcohol. Amondson was divorced and has four children. He was invited as a guest on Oprah after sending a letter to the show about singles in Seattle. The show received high ratings and was repeated four times. Amondson resided on Vashon Island in Washington.
