A left back, Jean-Alain Fanchone won the Coupe Gambardella with RC Strasbourg in 2006, defeating in final Karim Benzema's Olympique Lyonnais. He signed his first professional contract in March 2008 and is currently under contract until 2013 at Strasbourg. He made his professional debut on August 8, 2008 during a Ligue 2 match at Dijon and was credited with an assist on that occasion. Fanchone left after six years RC Strasbourg on 4 July 2009 to sign with OSC Lille.
He has been selected for France at the U18 and U19 level, taking part in the U19 European Championship in 2007.
