Malkin was born in Philadelphia to Rafaela, a schoolteacher, and Apolo, an aspiring doctor both Philippine citizens who had arrived in the U.S. earlier that year. At the time, her father was a physician-in-training with an employer-sponsored visa. She grew up in the small southern New Jersey town of Absecon, where she was raised in the Roman Catholic faith.
