The airport is the largest in eastern India and one of only two operating in West Bengal, the other being at Bagdogra. It is a major centre for all flights to North-East India and Bangladesh.
The airport has three terminals: a domestic terminal (opened in the early 1990s), an international terminal (the oldest terminal) and a cargo terminal. It was given a major facelift in the recent past.
