As with the other regions of England, apart from Greater London, the South East has no elected government and few central powers, the creation of elected regional governments proposed by the Labour Party after its election in 1997 having been aborted. The headquarters for the region's governmental bodies, such as they are, are in Guildford. The largest city in the region (by population) is Brighton and Hove, but the dominant influence on the region's economy is neighbouring London.
