The Sushruta Samhita is a Sanskrit redaction text on all of the major concepts of ayurvedic medicine with innovative chapters on surgery, attributed to Sushruta, likely a historical sage physician of 6th century BC Varanasi, sometimes dubbed the "father of Surgery". The text as preserved dates to the 3rd or 4th century AD. The Bower Manuscript holds some of the most important information related to the early Ayurvedic documents. Amongst the eight divisions of medical knowledge, surgery was considered the most important branch. The text was translated into Arabic in the 8th century. The Sushruta Samhita contains 184 chapters and description of 1120 illnesses, 700 medicinal plants,a detailed study on Anatomy, 64 preparations from mineral sources and 57 preparations based on animal sources.
