Uploading Images to Topics

Images can be uploaded to all Freebase topics and add visual impact to topics, saved views, and base homepages. They help draw other users into browsing bases and saved views, and enliven factual information - it's one thing to read facts, but another to see an image of the person or place being described. And once someone has been drawn into viewing a topic because of an image, they're more likely to contribute additional factual information about it.

Images can come from anywhere - you can scan the cover of a book, contribute a photo you've taken yourself, add a company's logo or images of their products, or search the Web. The one thing to keep in mind, though, is that images must conform to the rules for Public Domain or Fair Use images, or be available for reproduction under a CC-BY license. You can use the tineye search engine to track down the original source of an image, or you can use Behold to find Flickr images that are available under CC-BY (be sure to select all three checkboxes - free to use + and modify + commercially ). With CC-BY licensing you must attribute the original source, so be sure to check out the instructions in the Uploading Images Under CC-BY for more information.

Uploading an Image

  1. Navigate to the topic where you want to add an image.
  2. Under Gallery click add.
  3. Add a new image by browsing to an image on your local computer and clicking Open.
  4. Enter a Title for the image. Note that if you don't enter a title, other users will not be able to find your image if they want to re-use it for one of their own topics.
  5. Select the appropriate license for your image: Public Domain, Fair Use, or CC-By.
  6. Click Upload.

After your image has uploaded, click on it to enter additional information about the image, such as the original creator.
