This type is for any agency which is operated by a government. It does not include bodies that constitute a government, such as legislatures and courts. This type can be used to show how agencies have merged, split, or otherwise turned into new agencies, using a combination of the "predecessor agency", "successor agency", "date founded" and "date dissolved" properties. Merges can be indicated by listing the merging agencies as the "predecessor" of the new agency, and by entering the same date for the founding of the new agency and dissolving of the old ones. Agencies splitting into multiple new agencies can be indicated similarly, by entering the new agencies as the successors of the old one, and entering the same dates for the dissolving of the old agency and founding of the new ones. An agency that is spawned off from an agency, but where the parent agency continues to exist can be indicated by listing the parent agency as the successor to the spawned agency, and by not entering a dissolved date for the parent agency (or, for now-defunct agencies, entering a date that is later than the founding date of the child agency).
