Property Display Settings

There are a number of settings in Schema editor that you can use to control how properties are displayed.

  • Hide - this is useful when a property contains data but you don't want users to see it. Removing a property is prohibited by schema editor when data exists for it, but hiding the property is allowed and it will make it appear not to be there.

  • Display as Vertical or Horizontal List - typically a new property will be displayed in the column on the right of the topic page and display items for that property in a vertical list. The exception to this is for literal values (text, boolean, integers, etc.) which appear in the center of the page template and list their values horizontally. You can override these defaults with this display setting.

  • Restrict to one value - use this option if the property should accept only a single value. For instance, a property on person called 'birth date' should probably be restricted to one value to prevent users from entering multiple birth dates in for a person.

  • Display as disambiguator - use this option when you want the property to appear along with the display name in a list. For instance, on the schema for 'musical album', you might want to make the property 'release date' a disambiguating property. With this checked, the system knows to display not only the title of the album but also the release date in a list of albums. In this case you would see an album listed like so: "Nevermind - 1991"

  • Ordering: the order that properties appear in schema editor drives the order that they appear on topics of that type. Depending on whether properties are displayed horizontally or vertically, a property that is listed above another one in schema editor should appear earlier in the page when viewing a topic of that type. This also affects the order that disambiguating properties are displayed in a list. You can reorder properties by selecting them with the mouse and clicking the up or down errors to move them around. The default properties will alway appear in the same place, regardless of the ordering of the user-created properties.
