Is there a recommended source for album/film/book cover art? How does the licensing for that kind of thing go? When it's available on the artist or author website, or if it's on amazon, is that in the public domain?

Generally, album, film, and book art is copyright by the publisher; images put on someone’s Web site do not become public domain unless the owner explicitly declares so. By default, an image should be assumed to be copyright by its creator.
Images uploaded by Freebase users must comply with the Freebase Contribution Guidelines; specifically, images must be in the public domain, compatible with a CC-by license, or owned by the user, who agrees to license them CC-by by uploading them. Thanks for asking!
