This is an opera in three acts by Italian composer Lorenzo Ferrero on a libretto by Giuseppe Di Leva. The fundamental theme here is the individual terrorist action committed by anyone who believes that he/she is eliminating an evil by eliminating a person, in most cases the wrong person. Jean-Paul Marat was for two short months the leading figure of the Jacobin faction and one of the three most important men in France at the time of the French Revolution, alongside Danton and Robespierre. He was stabbed to death by the Girondin sympathizer Charlotte Corday. The opera was premiered at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma on February 21, 1989 under the baton of Roberto Abbado.
